Somehow, I think this is not just a costume, but a statement of the attitude of the wearer.
Hear that sound? That's the sound of hell freezing over. Come, Lord Jesus!!!
Which one?
Oh, this has to be one of my fellow Lutherans. The boxes in front of the altar, the 1970's Johnny Carson ferns in the background, the flowers on top and in the center of the altar like a coffee table; basically, the altar being used for everything else than what it is suppose to be.
So many of your pics make me laugh out loud.
This just made me want to vomit.
This has got to be a joke, right?
At some point someone had to have said "That sounds like a great idea."
Please pray for a return of respect and dignity.
No, no, no. Say this isn't so. But I know it is.
Yuk. And I thought clown masses were a thing of the past...
Wait, which guy in the picture...? They both look horrible
No, no, no! O God!
...and why is he wearing a hat in a church? Poor biretta...

yikes!!!
Sorry! My husband said it is a woman on the picture :) (in hat)
Notice the "pews" in front of them are empty.
The pastor is a UMC pastor from the Baltimore, MD area...I actually know the guy. He also had a black cat with him as a "prop."
I like the added dictionary definition. Makes one think: Would we ever see the Queen or Obama in such a get up?
Sorry, But I really get frosted whenever I see anything resembling a Clown Liturgy. There is somthing in them that just seems to mock and scorn the finished work of the Christ.
Is it perhaps unsurprising we can't see any of the congregation in the picture, or any servers?
Is it just the badly adjusted colour saturation on my screen, or is the genteleman to the left actually wearing a purple shirt?
One thing which has become common...and I see it here...is the empty music stand. Many people have come to see right through them, as if they are a normal prop.
Dear Fr Levi! The "left gentleman" is a woman. And yes: purple :D
Trinity Wall Street must be setting up another satellite parish. Be very afraid.
If the shoes fit...
Even though I usually get a laugh and get sick both when looking at your blog I want you to know it really is a great service you are performing.
Does God really care what a pastor wears? I don't see anything about pastor wardrobe in the bible.
Reminder to self: never go to church after eating bad calamari Saturday night.

Anonymous - Jesus advised us to be wise as serpents. A church that offers a steady diet - or even a soupcon - of things like clown outfits and vestments reminiscent of LSD trips and spin art is holding itself and its congregants up for ridicule. God likes laughter, but this is pathetic.
You may not read much in the Bible about wardrobe, but there are sure some devastating accounts of what happens to those who do not take gathering in worship with appropriate reverence in the Hebrew Testament.

The tragedy of this is that the minister is essentially giving us a public confession that he has lost all confidence in the Word that he is supposed to proclaim and the office he bears. He's capitulated to the world's estimation of the ministry as a useless vocation. After all, all it can do is proclaim the forgiveness of sins, and what good is that?
God Save Us!
Others have said it and I will too. Look at how empty this place is! If this is about church growth, where is everyone?!!?
Wanna know where they are? They're joining the Orthodox Church. Or they're going to a more respectful and reverent church within their tradition.
The costume says it all. They are as serious about their faith as their costumes. Lex orandi, lex credendi, lex vivendi...
aren't most people afraid of clowns???
That must be a joke!
Someone has one-upped Dr Schori!
Perhaps there is an informal bet running on all this? Such escalated outrages are otherwise difficult to explain.
This vestment is "Screwtape approved" !
Guaranteed to discourage worship and empty the church!
Satan loves it !
Actually, I've got a feeling this is Roly Bain, he is a priest who is also a clown. He comes and does children's services with tricks and fooling. It is actually very professional and thought provoking. I don't think he does his ordinary services in clown kit... those are NOT his everyday vestments!!!
He came to a previous church I was at - in fact I think that might be it in your photo. He was excellent.
Just thought you'd like to know! Context is everything!
