I believe the Episcopalians refer to that as the primate's staff. It means that Mrs. Schori essentially has the position of an archbishop but not the title.
Bidden or not, KSJ will be present. She is the bishop of bishops, not the bishop of clergy yet insists on meeting with everyone before a new ordination. Who asked her?
I really try hard to enjoy this blog, but the disrespectful attitude to Katharine Jefferts Schori really gets on my nerves. So you don't think she's a bishop? Fine, then call her Dr Schori, for that is her 'secular' title. Or do what you'd do, courteously, to a leader of another church, and dignify her with the ecclesiastical title she's accorded by her church.
As for the staff, it's a metropolitical cross, and signifies the office of Primate of The Episcopal Church - the office to which she was elected is formally titled "Presiding Bishop and Primate"
P.S. I don't like the cope (or the set of which it is part that includes a mitre, chasuble, dalmatic and tunicle).
Please explain why Dr. Schori deserves respect? Her funding as a scientist was cut - but not the funding of her colleagues. It is quite likely she is yet another female cleric who was having a mid-life career crisis. Her experience as clergy is as thin as onion paper, and has no known pastoral capacity - ask anyone who has worked at 815. Respect is earned, no matter what you're wearing on your head. Incidentally, this is posted by a liberal, so no profiling please. Might it just be that those who lobbied for her election made an enormous mistake?
What scares us about midlife crises is too many lawyers decide they want to become priests. At GC09 the list of laity with Esq. and Attorney at Law after the names was amazing.
The least Schori could have done was use a miter that matched one color in the cope - and a matching fabric. The one she's wearing doesn't match at all - which reflects on the rest of us based on her position/title.
Did +Gris use the same staff or is this more of her own self-elevation?
When Schori does something worthy of respect, she will have earned ours. Until then, she continues to add to the disrespect she has earned. We try, even with all she has done, to treat her as we would like to be treated. Her position as a representative of the rest of us calls on her to a higher standard. We pray for her to live into that.
For all the disagreements I had with him over the years, I have to give Frank Griswold this much. I don't remember him ever rocking anything as bad as this.
I happen to love this cope+mitre set... even though MOST of what you post on here is spot on.
This set is really well-made and fits perfectly.
This picture is from the recent consecration of the new Bishop of GA... my new Bishop... and I was there!!!! I received the Eucharist from the PB... pretty cool stuff regardless of your personal feelings about her.
That's all... just had to say that since I follow this blog & a GA pic made it on here.
The Presiding Bishop's Primatial Staff has been around for a long time. There are photographs of John Hines handing it to John Maury Allin in 1973, and it would be consistent with the expansion of the role of Presiding Bishop under Hines (1967)for a staff to have been created at about that time, though it could have been earlier.
On most mitres, the front and back verticle panels are either parallel or incline slightly together. Ms. Katie's, however, incline outwards, like the sides of a bucket.
Perhaps this is to catch the exhaust particulates from any birds that happen to be passing overhead?

She really needs to go on the 'What Not to Wear' show
South Africa called. They want their flag back.

On a more technical note - when did Mrs Schori get promoted? That double beamed cross has always been the prerogative of an archbishop.

...Neither the title nor the respect...

Maybe she wants to change her name to Katherine Joseph Schori.

Thank heavens that no *male* cleric in TEC has ever had a mid-life crisis :)
Maybe these vestments are prophetic? After the release of the iPad, KJS could be promoting the new Apple product: the iSore.
Would she look any better in a twin set and bonnet?

Thought I'd left this before, but thanks Anon at 10:12, 2/8 for info about the staff.
Looks more like duck bill on steroids - like Daffy Duck got botox and collagen injections.
everyone at my church dressed like that,in the 70's
