In fairness, Chris, I don't think the HF always has a choice, at least when he's on his travels (as he was when he wore this monstrosity). The taste on display when he's on his home turf is in stark contrast to the stuff provided by the local organisers of papal ceremonies – some of whom seem to be out to humiliate him (or to use him in order to make personal statements of their own.)
I should add, it's a sign of the man's humility that he meekly puts on whatever's put in front of him. But I bet he breathes a sigh of relief when he gets back to base, where he can have his own way without behaving like a prima donna.

Francis, I clicked on your link -- the photo was from the notorious papal trip to Austria, where the vestments were simply atrocious.
And didn't Papa Benedict fire his master of ceremonies as soon as he got back to Rome? Since then, his vestments have been much classier.
Francis, I'll cut him some slack on that blue thing. Maybe he's a Marquette University basketball fan. :-)
At least it's got crosses on it, unlike some TEC monstrosities.
